Kinja'd!!!

I am looking to purchase a commuter vehicle to replace my current Hyundai Santa Fe beater.

A little bit about my driving habits. I drive 25k miles a year for work and leisure. Living on Lake Superior makes for very harsh and long winters. I have done fine with a fwd and snow tires, only getting stuck twice *hooning related*. My commute to work is 72 mile round trip on back roads and gravel.

My wish list for new vehicle.

Highway mpg 27 or better

Comfortable

Safety rating and airbags is a big concern

Awd preferably but I can make do with fwd

Under 20k

I bought a Subaru Outback for my fiancé, enjoy driving it and the mpg is much better then the Hyundai. This has me looking at newer subarus 2013 and newer, would prefer the newer motor and amenities. Besides the subarus I also been eyeing up used luxury cars and impressed with what’s around. The Lexus GS awd, vw cc 2.0 or vr6 awd.

Anything else I should be looking at?

I would suggest the Subaru XV Crosstrek as they’re inexpensive and have essentially what you’re looking for. I don’t think a GS is going to appreciate gravel roads quite like a Subaru will.

see if you cant nab a TDI from somewhere. diesel-gate, diesel-crepe, they are still dam fine cars, comfy, reliable, and get AMAZING hwy fuel econ to boot.

the IS250 AWD is also something to look into.or any used lexus, really. they are very comfy and reliable machines.

if you want the best comfort out of anything, look into a volvo. The swedes do 2 things better then anyone. comfort/ergonomics, and safety.

Can a WRX get that mileage on the highway?

My vote is for a VW CC! Pretty certain I’m going to get one for my next commuter car. I think you can have the VR6 with all wheel drive, but not the 2.0T.

A 2013-14 Buick Encore. Seriously.

It fits every single qualification you listed, plus it’s very well-equipped as a used vehicle under $20k. Edmunds.com says dealer retail on a top-line ‘13 Premium AWD model is $18,500.

It’s the exterior size of a Sonic, its AWD system is highly efficient, it’s big inside, comfortable, quiet, and versatile.

Maybe a standard Subaru Legacy sedan, I think they are under appreciated for what they are.
Here is one, that is really nice.

I quite like our Mazda CX-5. It’s rather tossable, a very nice compromise of ride and handling. You can get them used with AWD for under $20k. Here’s one local to me for $17k

forgot to mention tdi’s how dare I!

Passat sel and golf sel are on my radar now.

Will have to look into volvo’s, not familiar with which ones are good and worth owning. Have always enjoyed the look of 850r

you could get a T5 V40 for that price I think.

AWD, decent power, WAGON, looks high class, VERY safe (easy to sell on the wife) and when your not hammering on it, decent fuel econ too

What's the deal with 2007 and newer s80 are they reliable or to advanced for own good. The price on them is reasonable

I think people just forgot about them.

I know the older ones (pre 2007) had a ticking time bomb of a transmission, but the newer ones i think should be good. we loved our 2001 S40.
